Ignition Interlock Device

Being charged with driving under the influence can lead to many consequences. These can range from jail time and probation to fines and driver’s license suspension. In certain cases, drivers may be ordered to have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle (at their own expense, of course).

What is an ignition interlock device?

An ignition interlock device is a system that is designed to test alcohol on the driver’s breath. This is a handheld device that is typically attached to an automobile’s dashboard. To use the test, the driver will blow into the device.

If the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) is over a preset limit, typically .02 to .04 percent, the vehicle will not be able to start. However, not only are you required to blow into this machine before starting your car, you will also have to continue taking tests while you are driving. These are known as rolling tests or running retests. This extra test is designed to prevent other individuals from blowing into the machine to start the car so the impaired person can take over driving. If the driver fails this rolling test, an alarm will sound or the lights will go on and off until the car is turned off.

Ignition interlock devices also have safeguards in place so that drivers can not cheat the test. They may require humming into the machine to determine that it is a human and not an air machine taking the test.

These devices are not cheap – the costs for installation and maintenance can add up, and the driver is responsible for all fees associated with the machine.

Ignition interlock devices can be beneficial to drivers who have been convicted of multiple DUIs. This option is an attractive alternative to a license suspension or revocation and allows the driver the use of his or her vehicle to go to school, work and other necessary locations.
