SR-22 Insurance

Sometimes getting affordable insurance is hard enough. However, for drivers who have been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI), it can be almost impossible.

If you are convicted of drunk driving, your insurance rates will definitely increase. The premiums can go up twice more than the amount you were paying before. Why do the rates go up so drastically? This is due to the Zero-Tolerance laws that went into effect in many states in 1995. Currently, South Carolina and Massachusetts are the only states that do not have Zero-Tolerance laws, but that may change in the future.

Did you know that you can even lose your insurance coverage after a DUI conviction? Though this depends on your driving record and the company that you use, some conservative risk insurance policies will cancel your insurance after they find out that you have a DUI on your record.

After your conviction, some companies will automatically cancel your insurance, and then offer you SR-22 insurance. This insurance is much higher, but unfortunately is the only option in many cases.

SR-22 insurance is a certificate of insurance coverage that is filed by the insurance company directly to the state. If you let your SR-22 expire or get cancelled, the insurance company is required to notify the state. This will lead to your driver's license being revoked until you can become insured again.

This insurance must be maintained for at least three years. If you have no more convictions during this time, you may be covered by normal insurance again.

While some companies will cancel your insurance, others are not allowed to terminate your coverage mid-term following a conviction. This will depend on the laws in your state or county. It is a good idea to find out the policies in your state so you can discuss it with your insurance company.

Please note that in most states, insurance companies check for DUI and DWI convictions every three years. Even if they don't notice after you are convicted, the company has three years to cancel your policy or raise your rates.

Don’t let this happen to you! If you have been arrested for driving under the influence, you need an attorney on your side to walk you through the court system. A good lawyer can find ways to defend you and avoid a conviction and the penalties that come along with it.
